Wardrobe Tips for your Personal Brand Shoot

  • DO wear solid colors

When selecting wardrobe, it is tempting to choose your favorite printed pieces to make a statement or show your personality, but this is actually not the best decision. In every day looks, prints and patterns may look great, but they can have a negative effect in brand photography.

Patterns and prints can take away from you as the focus of the image. It is best to pick solid colors that complement you.

There are always exceptions, especially since there are no rules in fashion, right? I personally love florals. Printed pieces may work well in a particularly plain location background or if you’d like to showcase a more fun and youthful side. If you do choose printed pieces, consider how they fit with your brand.

  • DO consider your brand colors

It is a great idea to consider where you will be placing your images on the web. I am not saying you should match your color palette exactly, but consider your other visual elements (i.e. try not to wear bright blue blazer if your color palette is soft warm hues). That being said, I always love a pop of color! Try adding color in layers or accessories.

  • DO ensure a proper fit

Perhaps the most important suggestion of all, double check that the fit of your clothing is flattering (not too tight, especially). If you are uncomfortable in the clothing, it will show in the pictures. Try on your wardrobe items well in advance, in case you need to make adjustments or choose different items.

  • DO try thicker material items

Structured pieces with “shape” will photograph better and hold up better against wrinkles. You don’t need to wear a fitted blazer, but consider stronger materials that will provide a smooth and polished look.

  • DO accessorize

Jewelry can really take your look to the next level and create a polished look. Just remember, less is more with jewelry. You can’t go wrong with a simple necklace. Try to avoid a large/statement necklace and earrings. It is important to keep the number of pieces you wear to a minimum to keep the focus on you!

  • DON'T wear super trendy pieces

Your brand images will want to last you for a while, and fashion trends come and go. Considering the time and effort you are spending on your branding images, you will want to use them for a while.

  • DON'T show too much skin

Since branding images are used for self promotion and your business, it is best to dress with more conservative clothing than revealing pieces. Wear clothing that is respectable and modest.

  • DON'T try new styles

I totally understand the desire to try new styles and pieces for your branding images, you want to look and feel “cool”! I highly recommend shying away from new styles and staying true to clothing you would regularly wear, we want to highlight your personality!
